Burnishing Pads

Pictured below is a Travertine floor I worked on recently in Bedford — and it’s a great example of something we see all the time with travertine floors that haven’t had the care they deserve. It’s difficult to spot from a distance but if you look at the photo closely you should be able to pick out a crack running along the build line between the two rooms. You might not notice it at first, but as you walk towards it, it jumps right out at you.

The customer called me because they’d been living with it for a while and frankly, they’d had enough. One option would be to replace the tile but it would result in damaging electric underfloor heating matt in the process and there’s always the chance the replacement tile would look different and stand out. In this post I’ll take you through exactly what I did to fix it, and why it’s not as simple as just filling a gap.

Travertine is a naturally porous Limestone that forms with beautiful organic patterns. It’s a premium stone, and when it’s looked after properly, it looks absolutely stunning. This floor however hadn’t been professionally cleaned or sealed for some time. just occasional mopping over the years. The sealer has long since worn off and this is when a natural stone like Travertine starts to suffer. Moisture and dirt get into the stone and it becomes vulnerable at the stress points. In this case the cracked Travertine had been laid between rooms and pressure between the floors increased the stress on the tile.

That build line (where one room meets another) is always a weak point. There’s often a slight difference in subfloor level, there’s foot traffic concentrated right at that threshold, and without a good protective seal, any small movement telegraphs straight through the stone as a crack.

When the customer got in touch, they told me there was a crack between the rooms, but what concerned them most was that it was becoming more visible every time someone walked through the doorway. It had become impossible to ignore.

Repairing Cracked Travertines Flooring in Bedford

When I arrived to survey the floor, I could see exactly what they meant as your eye was drawn straight to it. It wasn’t just an aesthetic problem, if left untreated that crack can widen, collect dirt, and become a much more significant repair further down the line.

Now, filling a crack in travertine sounds straightforward, but the real challenge is the blend. Travertine isn’t one colour. It’s a living stone with veins, tonal shifts, fossils even. Every tile is slightly different. If I just slap a standard filler in there, it’s going to look like exactly what it is, a repair. My job isn’t just to fill the crack. It’s to make it disappear. And that takes time, patience, and the right materials matched precisely to this specific floor.

First, I thoroughly cleaned the floor and especially the crack with Tile Doctor Pro-Clean, removing any dust, debris, and old residue in the process. Any contamination in there will compromise the bond, so this step is non-negotiable. The floor was rinsed and extracted with a wet vacuum and then left to dry.

Once the crack was completely dry and clean the crack could be filled with epoxy resin. I use a professional-grade two-part epoxy system which is carefully colour matched on-site to the tones of the Travertine in the floor. The resin is then worked into the crack in stages, making sure it penetrates right to the base rather than just sitting on the surface.

Epoxy resin is the material of choice for this type of repair because it’s rigid, stone-hard when cured, and bonds exceptionally well to natural stone. It won’t shrink, it won’t crack again, and when it’s coloured and finished correctly, it becomes part of the tile.

Once cured, I levelled the repair flush with the tile surface with and then carefully sanded and blended it — working through finer grits of Tile Doctor Diamond encrusted pads until the filled area matched the sheen and texture of the surrounding stone. That blending stage is where the skill really lies.

Sealing a Travertine Tiled Kitchen Floor

With the crack repaired, the whole floor was sealed with Tile Doctor Colour Grow, a high-quality penetrating stone sealer. This soaks into the stone rather than sitting on top, protecting it from the inside and ensures moisture and staining remain on the surface where they can be easily cleaned away.

This is also what this floor had been missing for years. A properly sealed travertine floor is far more resilient, far easier to maintain, and it holds its appearance dramatically better over time. It’s the difference between a floor that lasts years and one that keeps giving you problems.

Once complete the crack disappeared and the repair had blended into the stone and was literally invisible— you’d never know it was there.

And the customer’s reaction when they saw it?

“I honestly couldn’t believe it. I was expecting to still be able to see something — but there’s nothing there. It looks better than it ever has. I wish I’d called sooner.”

Over the moon — that’s the only way to describe it. And that’s exactly the reaction we aim for on every single job.
